Department of meteorological forecasts - a combination of experience and youth - is the main operational and production unit of the Center for analysis, forecasting of weather conditions and hydrometeorological support of the Ukrainian hydrometeorological center. .Among us and and it has always been so, there are three generations of forecasters: with experience from 35 to 5 years and very young specialists studying at the graduate courses at the Kyiv Taras Shevchenko University (alma mater of most of our forecasters) or just graduated from Odessa Environmental University.

We are lucky enough to have chosen an interesting and exciting, but also complex and demanding profession. As part of the large family of meteorologists united by the World Meteorological Organization, we have to ensure the resilience of the population, governments and industries to weather changes, natural disasters and hazardous weather phenomena:

   This amount of work is carried out through a national network of observations (meteorological and aerological stations), satellite and radar data, the mutual exchange of information with national and international meteorological centers of Members of WMO and through the introduction of modern technologies.

  Let`s recall the history. Accept life greatly depends on the weather. Some of the processes occurring in our atmosphere are so extreme that affect people both physically and emotionally. The weather has for centuries caused on the one hand the fear and admiration of the other hand- the natural curiosity of people due to which "meteorology", one of the oldest sciences, was born. Its father - Aristotle in IV. BC. BC in the book titled "Meteorologika" first collected information about many phenomena in the atmosphere and attempted to explain them. But only inventions made in the Renaissance - the thermometer and barometer in 1597 and in 1644 - opened up the possibility for quantitative description of atmospheric phenomena. In 1780 the Mannheim Meteorological Society was created - the first to organize observation of the weather on 40 stations around the world based on which on Brandes in 1820 created the first synoptic maps of Europe. In 1836 in Lugansk the first regular meteorological observations commenced, and on June 21, 1921 the first synoptic map of Ukraine was produced.

  Present. Today's global monitoring system that is subject to WMO, consists of about 10,000 ground stations (including 189 in Ukraine), 1000 aerological stations on land (8) and on ships, 100 drifting stations and 600 buoys. Data from these observations are presented today at our synoptic maps. Thehe term ΣΥΝΟΠΤΙΚΟΟΣ means "capable of seeing everything" from the Greek, hence the name of our profession - forecaster. By the way, meteorology has the most terms from Greek and Latin, which also testifies to the ancient history of the science, which one cannot but be proud of. In support of the main synoptic method: the analysis and forecast of atmospheric processes and weather conditions with the help of synoptic maps - new technologies are constantly coming. Since the 30s of the XX century. - aerological observations and compilation of high-altitude weather maps up to 20-25 km began. On October 4, 1957, for the first time in the world, an artificial Earth satellite was launched into Earth orbit, and since 1958, meteorological equipment has been installed at the SZZ. Since 1968, UkrHMC began to receive data from the weather forecast, which made it possible to more objectively conduct a synoptic analysis, to detect the occurrence of dangerous and natural weather phenomena in a timely manner. Since the 1960s, radar observations made it possible to better predict insidious convective phenomena: thunderstorms, hail, squalls, showers; at this time, the first processing of meteorological information using a computer began. Over the last decade, the means of production of forecasters have been extremely updated: the automated workplace of the forecaster, data from the European geostationary satellite, access to the models of world forecasting centers. All this, together with the experience of the older generation of weather forecasters and the efforts of young people, makes it possible to make high-quality weather forecasts with a high level of reliability - 90-95% for 1-5 days.
